Solidigm considers a US factory for NAND memory chips
Upstate New York is emerging as a possible location as the industry reassesses the geography of critical semiconductor capacity.
The story
Solidigm, the NAND-memory unit of SK Hynix, is considering building a chip factory in the United States, with upstate New York among the possible locations, Reuters reported.
NAND memory stores data in phones, computers and data-centre systems. A US facility would add domestic capacity in a segment that is essential to computing but often receives less attention than advanced processors.
The decision will depend on manufacturing economics, incentives, workforce and long-term demand. It also shows that semiconductor resilience requires a broad supply chain—not only the most visible logic chips.
INNOVOX analysis
AI systems depend on moving and storing vast amounts of data, which makes memory a strategic part of the computing stack. Domestic production could improve resilience, but NAND is a cyclical market where prices and utilisation change sharply. A factory therefore needs long-term competitiveness rather than incentives alone.
What to watch
A final location decision, incentive package and construction timetable will determine whether the proposal advances. Workforce availability, energy costs and the expected generation of manufacturing technology will be central to the economics.
